How do you define success?

There may be as many definitions of success as there are people.

Some people define success in terms of money, wealth, fame, power, influence, and material goods.

Others define success in terms of happiness, satisfaction, living where you want, setting your own schedule, being your own boss, and setting your own direction in life.

Perhaps you define success in terms of great relationships, good friends, a loving spouse, great children, and a happy home life.

Do you define success in being able to travel the world and have great experiences?

How do you define success?

What is more important? Why?

I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,

JD

I think success has to do with meeting a goal. No matter what the goal is, when I've met it, I've been successful.

Did I get the zipper done up on the jeans? Then I've had success.

Did I pay off the mortgage? Then I've had success.

Did I bite my tongue when I could have lashed back? Then I've had success.

How I feel about each of those successes will depend on the value I place on each of the goals. But reaching any goal is a measure of success.

I think I agree with Audrey - success is achieving anything you set out to achieve. Could be a six figure income, or it could be just getting dinner on the table.

For me, my over all goal in life is to have the freedom to make choices, that is I'd like to have the financial backing to facilitate changes and choices for myself and my children. I'd like to have the financial freedom without being tied to a job or a mode of contributing to life that I hate.

I think work is a very important part of our life. Our "work" whether employed by another or self employed is our contribution or service to mankind. If our work is trash disposal or motivational speaking it is what we do to serve our circle of influence.

I don't want to spend my life working, serving doing something I was not meant to do, something that I hate to do, just because it pays the bills.

Right now, I do what I want to do mostly, but there are changes that I'd like to make and that means there are some things I hang on to for security that I need to let go of if I am going to succeed in the area that I'd like to be earning an income in.

Success for me would allow me the freedom to make changes like this and still provide well for myself and my family.

Success would also be for me to train my children to live in such freedom.

I agree that success is when you set out and meet your goal, but I think there's another kind of success that involves not only meeting your goal, but the goal of others.

For example, when the two towers fell, that was a success to the people who created it, but it was not a success to the people experiencing it.  However, although these people achieved success, they experience karma, and so it really wasn't a true 'success' only temporary, and that success will be reversed.

But for some reason, I think success is when everyone wins.  Success is when you do something that creates an effect on everyone and everything that makes you and everyone happy.

I believe true success is the goal of everyone and everything.  Success is Creation.

Hi Answer,

I think that is very insightful.

Sure, success is good when we accomplish our goals.

Success is best when it helps all involved.

Thanks for saying that!

Success to me is doing one or more things I had on my list.  My goals are always tiny steps toward reaching an even greater goal.  I want to celebrate success daily, so I create small successes so I have reason to celebrate.

I am writing an Ebook, so if I write one page or one chapter, I have made the day a success.  When that book is complete, it will be a major success, but each page and chapter along the way is a success.

When my husband was sick, laying in his bed trying to get over Guilllan Barre', success was helping him get past the pain for one more day.  Today, when I see him walk, where before I had to lift him from his bed into his wheelchair, I know each of those "days" were a success.

Never let problems get you down, look upon it as an opportunity to conquer the problem and create success.  When Tom was sick, we lost our Tree Service and our Crane Service.  Closing down businesses that took 30 years to build could have been looked at as a failure.  But in looking closer, I see success.

At 65 years old, Tom now has the opportunity to retire.  Before he got sick, there seemed no way we could walk away from the businesses without taking major losses.  But someone was looking out for us.  We closed the businesses, sold the equipment and stepped closer to his lifelong dream.  Without a devastating illness to "force" him to give it up, we would have been trapped until the day he died.

I find little successes in writing one page for my website, or reaching a new high number of visitors.  Don't ever tell me I've failed, I am successful every day!

Hi Cheryl,

I'm happy to hear that Tom is doing better and has the freedom to find new interests and new directions in this stage of his life. Retirement can be a very good thing!

I lost everything about 15 years ago and it was both terrible and freeing, so I can relate somewhat.

I have an idea for an ebook I want to write, but I am not (yet) doing what you are doing - writing a page and then a chapter....

Writing can be a lonely experience, but it can have great rewards.

Even failing can be a success when one learns the necessary lessons.

Thanks for sharing.

Act on your dream!
